Red Sox add 19 Non-Roster Invitees to Spring Training

The Boston Red Sox have invited 19 non-rostered players to Spring Training this February. Seven pitchers, seven infielders and five outfielders have gotten the card in the mail and have RSVP'ed. The pitchers, who are due to report this Tuesday, February 12th, are Pedro Beato, Chris Carpenter, Anthony Carter, Jose De La Torre, Terry Doyle, Chris Hernandez and Oscar Villarreal. The Infielders, who are due to report this Friday, February 15th, are Xander Bogaerts, Jon Diaz, Mark Hamilton, Justin Henry, Deven Marrero, Lyle Overbay and Drew Sutton. The outfielders, who are also due to report next Friday, are Jackie Bradley Jr, Jeremy Hazelbaker, Juan Carlos Linares, Mitch Maier and Ryan Sweeney.

Eight of the 19 invitees have played on a major league roster before, with three appearing for the Red Sox in 2012 (Beato, Carpenter and Sweeney).

Because of Ryan Sweeney and Lyle Overbay's MLB experience, the Red Sox must choose by the end of March whether to add either player to it's major league roster. The Sox must tell Overbay by March 26th and Sweeney by March 28th.

Alex Speier of WEEI reported that top prospect Bryce Brentz will not be attending camp because he shot himself in the leg while cleaning his gun. Brentz reported that it occurred last month and that it was "nothing serious." GM Ben Cherington has noted that the injury may cost Brentz his chance to make the team, but Brentz has mentioned that he is ready to go 100% by this Monday.
