Lyle Overbay has been released, is Ryan Sweeney next

It was a valiant effort by Lyle Overbay but in the end the Red Sox decided that Daniel Nava and Mike Carp were better suited to backup Mike Napoli at first base. On Tuesday the 36-year old Overbay was granted release by the Red Sox according to a league source.

Overbay, if granted his release, will now have the opportunity to seek other opportunities with teams around the league. One possible landing spot for the first baseman could be with the rival Yankees. New York has been decimated by injuries and in need of solid veteran help.

Boston.com pointed out that Ryan Sweeney has an opt out opportunity on March 28 as well. With the rise of Sox prospect Jackie Bradley Jr. it's becoming apparent that Sweeney is a man without a country. Could the 28-year old be on his way out of Beantown as well?
