After suffering a concussion in an at bat where Stephen Drew was hit in the head he will finally return to the field tonight to make his debut with the Boston Red Sox. Drew hasn't played with the team in over a month and was replaced by Jose Iglesias. Iglesias performed fantastically in spring training in Drew's absence, and even performed well hitting in the 9 spot for the team when the season started. Today Drew was officially activated off of the teams 7-Day DL bringing him back onto the teams 25 man roster. Unfortunately because Drew was activated Iglesias was designated for assignment yesterday, being sent back to AAA in Pawtucket. While everyone knew that this move was going to happen, and happen soon it is sad to see Iglesias lose his spot. He played so well in spring training and earned the spot. Drew will add a bigger offensive threat to the lineup but will not be as good of a defensive shortstop as Iglesias was.
Other news coming across the wire today was that starting pitcher John Lackey was placed on the 15-Day DL. Lackey who pitched for 4.1 innings in his first start of the season before straining his right biceps muscle. Alex Wilson was called up from Pawtucket to replace Lackey. In the wake of Lackey's ability to pitch the Red Sox announced that Alfredo Aceves will start on Thursday for the team. Im not so sure about this decision, the team in 5-2 currently and Aceves is a loose cannon that could go off at any time. Not only has Aceves shown that he has problems on the field but off the field as well. Im not quite sure what manager John Farrell is thinking starting Aceves instead of someone else but we will just have to trust him. This season im adopting the motto of In Farrell we trust, if he backs the starting of Aceves than I back the starting of Aceves.
What do you think about Drew starting tonight, was the sending of Iglesias back to AAA justified? Should we expect anything from Lackey this season, will Aceves help or hurt the team when he starts on Thursday? Answer below in the comments or talk to me on twitter @Ryanthahawaiian.
