As the last days of the Red Sox regular season wind down, the possibility that Jacoby Ellsbury returns to the lineup before the playoffs gets slimmer and slimmer.

The American League Division Series opens Oct. 4.

Sox manager John Farrell said Sunday that Ellsbury, out since Sept. 5 with a fractured bone in his right foot, could return to the field Wednesday in Colorado.

“Optimistically from my end, hopefully he might be in the lineup on Wednesday. The work he's going through right now, the baseball activities, are starting to wrap up. There's been no setbacks. That's an optimistic view, but I'd hope we'd be able to get him some at bats that day."
The Red Sox have had the free-agent-to-be throwing resumed baseball activities on Friday and was hitting off a tee.

Ellsbury said, "I’m definitely ahead of schedule.”

Ellsbury is hitting .299/.355/.424 with a league-leading 52 stolen bases over 131 games.
