To Tender or Not to Tender

That is the question.

Today at 11:59 PM EST the deadline passes for the Red Sox to offer contracts to any unsigned players on the rooster, otherwise they become free agents.

The Red Sox front office still has some work to do today as the list of players they might want to keep.

These are the ones to watch in the news that rolls out today.
  • Andrew Bailey
  • Andrew Miller
  • Franklin Morales
  • Junichi Tazawa
  • Mike Carp
Andrew Bailey was supposed to be the closer from 2012 onwards, but has been mostly found on the injured list. This last year he had right shoulder surgery causing him to miss the second half of the season. He made $4.1 million in 2013 while throwing only 28 2/3 innings and the question is, are they confident he can make a full recovery?

Joel Sherman tweets that Andrew Bailey will be tendered a contract today.
Is that wise?

Andrew Miller did very well last season, having great success against right handed batters coming out of the bullpen. He made only $1.475 million last year so would be surprised if he is not brought back.

Franklin Morales is another versatile pitching asset that I think the Red Sox will bring back, as when he is healthy he has given them good innings of work.

Who would not bring back Junichi Tazawa? He was both a mainstay out of the bullpen and a star in this year's postseason.

First baseman/outfielder Mike Carp, who seemed to come through every time he got the opportunity, had a .296 average with nine homers, 43 RBIs and an .885 OPS in 216 at-bats. Can't imagine why you would let him go.

So there you have it, a flurry of offers and news we can expect to start flowing out of the Red Sox management offices today and on into the evening. Sit back and enjoy the show!
