Must Be New Math

One thing I find a little puzzling is talk that trading Marco Scutaro opened up room on the Red Sox payroll. Clearly it did, but not that much. Baseball Reference says Scutaro made $5.5 million in 2011 -- nothing to sneeze at, but not a bank-breaker by baseball standards.

By comparison, Bobby Jenks, who appeared in 19 games, made $6 million in 2011.

People speculating on this windfall of cash from the Scutaro trade have implied that it would enable the Sox to sign Roy Oswalt.

So what did Roy Oswalt make in 2011?

$16 million.
