Bard, Sox Let Phillies Walk All Over Them

Daniel Bard's rough 1st inning put the Sox in an early 4-0 hole en route to a 6-4 loss in the opening game of the 3-game interleague weekend series at Citizens Bank Park. Bard walked 3 in the Phillies' opening frame and all 3 came around to score. He lasted 5 innings, charged with 5 runs on 3 hits, 5 walks and 2 hit batters.

The Sox actually outhit the Phillies 8-6 including home runs by Mike Aviles, Cody Ross and Adrian Gonzalez.

Former teammate Jonathan Papelbon came on in the 9th for his 12th save of the season.

NOTES - Mike Aviles was back in the leadoff spot for Boston; he responded with a double in the 1st inning and a solo home run in the 3rd.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia left the game in the bottom of the 5th inning after a pitch hit Phillies 1st baseman Ty Wiggington and ricocheted off Salty's ear.

Kevin Youkilis went 1-3 batting 3rd and playing 3rd for the Pawtucket Red Sox in a rehab assignment.
