Ross Powers Sox To 5-3 Win Over Rays

Cody Ross hit a solo home run in the top of the 3rd inning and drove in 2 more runs with a single in the top of the 8th to help lead the Red Sox to a 5-3 win over Tampa Rays in the finale of the 2-game series at Tropicana Field.

The Red Sox got on the scoreboard early with one run scoring on a bases loaded walk in the top of the 1st inning; Marlon Byrd and Cody Ross followed with solo home runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings respectively.

Felix Doubront started for the Red Sox. He went 5.2 innings allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits and 4 walks while striking out 7. Boston used 5 relief pitchers (Hill, Atchison, Miller, Padilla, and Aceves) for the final 3.1 innings. Combined, they allowed 1 run on 1 hit and didn't walk anyone.

NOTES - Doubront's record improved to 4-1 with the win. Following the recent trend by Red Sox starters, his ERA dropped from 4.46 to 4.09.

Designated hitter David Ortiz is expected to play first base during at least one of the upcoming interleague games in Philadelphia this weekend against the Phillies.

Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched 6.2 innings for the PawSox in a rehab start against Durham. He gave up 5 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits, 2 of which were home runs. He struck out 3 and didn't walk anyone.

Former Red Sox manager Don Zimmer, who had been hospitalized lately with kidney issues, was at the Trop to see the game.
