Pitcher Drake Britton makes debut -- on the basepaths

Red Sox rookie pitcher Drake Britton did not think he would get into last night's game. He had pitched the day before and was told he had the night off.

However, with the game on the line, manager John Farrell channeled his inner Bill Belichick and had an idea.

Farrell had discussed with his coaches before the ninth inning the possibility of pinch running for David Ortiz should he get on in the ninth. Once Papi singled to lead off the inning, Farrell made his move and summoned Britton in to pinch run. With one caveat, "don't do anything stupid."

After Jonny Gomes walked, Stephen Drew drilled a three-run homer to right field and all Britton had to do was trot home with the tying run. Gomes and Drew followed and the Red Sox won another wild one in Houston 7-5.

Here's Drake, courtesy of NESN, explaining how it all went down:

That's one run down, Drake. Only 2294 more to go to catch the all-time run scoring king Ricky Henderson.
