That version of Sale was not the one on the mound in Seattle Thursday afternoon, as the Mariners beat up on the Red Sox ace for seven runs in just three innings as Boston fell 12-4 to open the 2019 season.

Seattle slammed five home runs - three of them off of Sale - for their third straight win of the new season.

The Red Sox had an early 2-0 lead with J.D. Martinez delivering an RBI single in the first and Andrew Benintendi driving in a run with a sacrifice fly in the second.

Seattle took the lead with three in the second and four in the third, chasing Sale and opening the gates to the bullpen and Hector Velazquez who was charged with three runs (two earned) in 2.1 innings.

The Boston offense combined for eleven hits with Mookie Betts (three) and Martinez (two) leading the way.

Nathan Eovaldi will get the start tonight against the Mariners as the Red Sox attempt to even their record at 1-1 early in the 2019 season.
