The plot thickens in the shooting saga involving former Red Sox slugger David "Big Papi" Ortiz. It has now been reported that the organizer of the shooting was offered the equivalent of $7,800 to carry out the assassination.

It now appears that the armed attack on Ortiz involved a number of individuals, and not only the two that arrived on a motorcycle just prior to the shooting. Here is more from the Associated Press and New York Times:

Five suspects, including the alleged gunman, have been detained in the shooting of the former Red Sox star David Ortiz, the Dominican Republic’s chief prosecutor said Wednesday.

A sixth individual was also being pursued by the authorities in the shooting, which witnesses said was carried out by two men on a motorcycle and two other groups of people in cars.

The prosecutor, Jean Alain Rodríguez, spoke at a news conference on Wednesday, and the authorities gave the name of the alleged shooter as Rolfy Ferrery, also known as Sandy.

The director of the national police, Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte, said at the news conference that the coordinator of the shooting was offered 400,000 Dominican pesos, or about $7,800, to carry out the crime.

The gun used in the shooting has reportedly been recovered. The motive behind the attempted assassination remains unknown. Big Papi remains in guarded condition in the ICU at Mass general Hospital for the present time. Stay with CelticsLife for further updates.
