Sox Climb Out of the Basement With 7-4 Win Over Jays

Was it a hit? An error? Either way, Daniel Nava's fly ball to centerfielder Colbly Rasmus (ruled a single) resulted in a pair of runs for the Red Sox as they scored 4 times in the top of the 2nd inning en route to a 6-3 win over the Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre. The win moved the Red Sox to 3 games over .500 and out of the AL East cellar.

Felix Doubront went 6.1 innings in getting his 6th win of the season. Though not as sharp as he has been in some of his other starts, he struck out 7 while walking only 1. Of the 7 hits he allowed, 2 were solo home runs.

Quite the day for Nick Punto - he had 3 hits including his 1st home run in a Red Sox uniform. It came in the top of the 9th with no one on.

Alfredo Aceves picked up his 14th save of the season with a 1-2-3 9th inning.

NOTES - Daniel Nava was originally supposed to have Saturday off but was in the lineup once again. His 2-RBI single in the 2nd inning raised his average to .315 and he has an OPS of nearly 1.000. It's hard to say what's going to happen when Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford come back in a few weeks, but Nava has proven more than capable of playing at the Major League level. Should the decision come to send him back to Pawtucket, how would you like to be the guy whose job it is to tell him?

It was a pretty sloppy game with both teams making 2 errors; the Red Sox have dropped to 4th in the American League in fielding.

The win was Boston's 16th in their last 22 games. They've also won 4 of their last 5 series and 6 of their last 8.

Dustin Pedroia took pre-game swings in the cage and then took batting practice with the team. Pending how his thumb feels, he will take BP again on Sunday and there's a chance he could be back in the lineup on Tuesday.

The loss was Toronto's 7th in their last 10 games and dropped the Blue Jays into the basement of the American League East.
