The Return of the "PEDRO" Chant!

Unless you watched a lot of Red Sox spring training games this year, or have spent time watching the Pawtucket Red Sox this summer, chances are you didn't know a whole lot about Pedro Ciriaco prior to the Saturday night portion of the day/night doubleheader against the Yankees at Fenway Park.

Following a rough 0-4 performance earlier in the day, and in a game the Red Sox desperately needed to win if only to keep the traffic at the Tobin Bridge moving smoothly, Ciriaco had three hits including a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the 6th inning that turned a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead over the Yankees, en route to a 9-5 triumph. He also made a terrific defensive play in the top of the 4th. On a couple of occasions, the sold-out Fenway crowd could be heard chanting "Pedro, Pedro" in acknowledgement of his performance, something that hasn't been heard since the vintage days of Pedro Martinez. Ciriaco was called up from AAA Pawtucket prior to Friday night's game when Dustin Pedroia was placed on the 15-day DL.

The Red Sox pounded Phil Hughes for 5 runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings. Adrian Gonzalez and Mauro Gomez each had three hits including a pair of doubles. Nick Punto and David Ortiz also had two hits each.

Feliz Doubront got the win for the Red Sox, his 9th of the season. Following a rough 1st inning in which the Yankees jumped out to a 3-0 lead, he held the Yankees to 4 runs on 4 hits in 6.1 innings. He struck out 6 and walked just 1.
