Martinized - Yankees 4, Red Sox 2

Russell Martin's 2-run double off Red Sox reliever Daniel Bard in the top of the 7th inning pushed the Yankees to a 4-2 win in the rubber game of their mid-week series. The win leaves the Red Sox in 1st place by just a half game.

Boston starter Jon Lester struggled mightily in the top of the 1st inning, throwing 44 pitches although New York only had one run to show for the effort. Dustin Pedroia's 18th home run of the season (career high) to the centerfield bleachers off A.J. Burnett in the bottom of the 4th gave the Red Sox a 2-1 lead.

NOTES -

David Ortiz extended his hitting streak to 15 games - a career high - with a single off Burnett leading off the bottom of the 2nd inning.

Kevin Youkilis took batting practice prior to the game. He is expected to play this weekend against the Rangers.

The only September 1 call-up for the Red Sox was LHP Felix Doubront. He came on in relief of Daniel Bard in the 8th inning.
