Report: Wakefield and Varitek Offered Minor League Contracts

Rick Doyle reports for NESN.

The two are reportedly receiving outside interest, but it might not matter. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Varitek and Wakefield will decide whether to continue their careers with Boston or retire.
The Sox have reportedly offered minor league deals to both players, but there are no guarantees that either would make the big club out of spring training.
Your humble blogger doesn't know what to think, or root for. I can't recall minor league contracts being offered to players of such experience (though, in fairness, I'm not used to following negotiations this closely). It seems like a strong hint that the team wants them to retire, but I just don't know.
