The (Not a) Rookie

If his ERA stays low (1.33), you may begin hearing a lot about Aaron Cook, currently in Pawtucket.

In 27 innings, our news box tells me, he has eight strikeouts and nine walks. Worrisome.

Odder still, over his career, which includes one World Series team, he has 558 strikeouts and 408 walks in just over 1,300 innings. Essentially, he gives you about 3.67 strikeouts per game, and about 2.75 walks. I don't want to say he's coasted by, because that implies he hasn't worked hard. But, remove that implication, and he's coasted by. His career won-loss is just barely over .500.

He's 33, and been in baseball since 2003.

My inner screenwriter wants to see this guy come up and become a regular starter that energizes the team. But those numbers call for caution. Either way, with injuries and whatever else, I'm sure we'll see Cook later. Or sooner.
