Pedroia, Sweeney Lead Red Sox To 4-2 Win Over Blue Jays

Ryan Sweeney's RBI single in the top of the 9th inning helped lead the Red Sox to a 4-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays for their first win of the 2012 season. Trailing 2-1 going into the final frame, Dustin Pedroia led off the 9th inning with a double. He advanced to 3rd on a passed ball and scored the tying run on a sacrifice bly by Adrian Gonzalez. David Ortiz and Cody Ross both walked; they would come around to score on the RBI single by Sweeney and a wild pitch respectively (Darnell McDonald pinch-ran for Ortiz).

Red Sox starter Felix Doubrount turned in a decent outing, going 5 innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 6. Scott Atchison contributed 3 tremendous innings of scoreless relief.

The Red Sox first run of the game came in the top of the 6th inning on Dustin Pedroia's first home run of the season.

Toronto starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez pitched 6 innings; he was touched for 4 hits and he allowed just 1 one run on the solo HR by Pedroia.

Boston closer Alfredo Aceves pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning for his first save.

NOTES - Dustin Pedroia's 2 hits raised his average to .294. He and David Ortiz had multi-hit games.

Kevin Youkilis continues to struggle. He remains hitless on the season after 4 games (0-12).

Jarrod Saltalamacchia is off to a brutal start. He's not hitting and his defense has been shaky at best. Wonder if Jason Varitek is still in shape?

Daniel Bard makes his first start of the season Tuesday against the Blue Jays.
