Red Sox Ride 5-Run 6th To Give Bard 1st "W" As A Starter

Darnell McDonald's bases-clearing double in the top of the 6th inning highlighted a 5-run Boston outburst as the Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox 10-3 at U.S. Cellular Field to give Daniel Bard his first career win as a starter.

Bard pitched 7 innings allowing just 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits; he walked 1 and struck out 6. Matt Albers pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief.

It was the 5th win in a row for Boston.

David Ortiz continued his torrid April with another 2-hit game including his 4th home run of the season off Chicago starter John Danks who was knocked out of the game in the 6th inning.

NOTES - The Red Sox had 13 hits including a 9th inning home run by Darnell McDonald who had a career-high 4 RBI's. The only Red Sox starter to not get a hit was Kevin Youkilis but he did reach base on two walks and scored a pair of runs.

White Sox 1B Paul Konerko hit career home run #401 in the bottom of the 5th off Bard.

Red Sox catcher Kelly Shoppach won the Bat Throw Contest tonight. It might have been due to the cold weather, but he had a terrible time holding onto the bat in his hands in at least three of his at bats.

The Red Sox announced on Friday that they will honor former pitcher Tim Wakefield on May 15 when the team is home against the Seattle Mariners. Among the highlights of his 19-year career, Wakefield won more games at Fenway Park than any other pitcher in the history of the 100 year-old park.

The loss was the 4th straight for the White Sox.
