Yes, Ortiz was actually trying to steal

From ESPN Boston
TORONTO -- David Ortiz has played in 1,746 major-league baseball games, and has stolen 11 bases.

Do you know how many big leaguers have played at least as many games as Ortiz, and stolen fewer bases?

Four.
I have no problem with Ortiz running on his own. I feel the same way about it as I do when he lays a bunt down - just as long as it's not a regular occurence.

The reason that it took a perfect throw last night is the same reason why when Ortiz lays a bunt down he walks to first base - people don't expect it. You're never going to talk about steals with Ortiz when your going over his basement and ceiling, but the fact that he looks for situations like that is just an example of the intagibles that Ortiz brings to the game. The reason he can be such an effective hitter - whether it's the first innning or the bottom of the 9th - is because he is so observant of everything that is going on.

It's not easy to come off the bench cold, upwards of three times a game and a lot of the DH's in the league check out mentally whenever their not up, and then they go up and just try to knock it out. Ortiz has been able to extend his career because of his passion and knowledge of the game.

So keep running, Papi. As long as you don't forget to swing away.
