Bats Bail Buchholz Out, Sox Beat Orioles 8-6

Maybe Clay Buchholz doesn't like pitching with a lead. He retired the first 6 batters he faced and took the mound with a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Three hits, three walks and 4 runs later, the Orioles had a 4-2 lead. Buchholz would also give up a solo home run to Chris Davis in the 4th inning.

Boston tied the game in the top of the 6th inning. David Ortiz clubbed his 10th home run of the season, a titanic shot that landed on Eutaw Street. Daniel Nava drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and another run scored on a balk by Orioles starter Tommy Hunter. The Sox added 2 more runs in the 7th and another in the 8th.

The bullpen combo of Andrew Miller, Rich Hill, Vicente Padilla, and Alfredo Aceves combined for 3.2 innings. Hill allowed 1 run on 3 hits; the bullpen did not walk a batter. Miller got the win in relief and Aceves recorded his 10th save.

NOTES - The win marked a pair of first for the Red Sox - their 1st win over the Orioles in 2012 and the 1st time they've been at the .500 mark since late April.

Will Middlebrooks led a quartet of Sox with multi-hit games. He had 3 hits; Mike Aviles, Dustin Pedroia and Nava each had 2.

Playing outfield for the Red Sox is turning into a dangerous proposition. Cory Ross was diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture of the navicular bone in his left foot and will probably be placed on the disabled list. He will join 5 other Boston outfielders on the DL - Carl Crawford, Jacoby Ellsbury, Ryan Kalish, Darnell McDonald, and Jason Repko.
