Orioles Position Player Pitches Better, Sox Lose 9-6 in 17

Adam Jones slammed a 3-run home run off Darnell McDonald in the top of the 17th inning to give the Orioles a 9-6 win and a 3-game sweep of the Red Sox at Fenway Park on Sunday. McDonald was in the game after the Red Sox had gone through 7 relief pitchers. Position player Chris Davis got the win in relief with 2 scoreless innings after Balitmore had also used 7 relief pitchers.

You got the feeling early that this one would not be easy. First, Clay Buchholz was a mess. He didn't see the end of the 4th inning, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits, 3 of which left Fenway Park. He struck out 4 and walked 4.

The Red Sox got on the board in the bottom of the 4th inning when Ryan Sweeney singled home Mike Aviles. An inning later, the Red Sox tied the game on Will Middlebrooks' (pictured) 1st career grand slam.

NOTES - Mike Aviles (3), Ryan Sweeney (4), Will Middlebrooks (2) and David Ortiz (2) each had multi-hit games.

Aaron Cook needed 11 stitches to close the gash in his knee from yesterday's home plate collision.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia had a rough day behind the plate with 2 errors.

The Red Sox head to Kansas City after the game for a brief 3-game series before returning home to Fenway Park to face the Cleveland Indians next Thursday through Sunday.
