Other Red Sox First base options

The Red Sox are apparently kicking a few tires around some of the used car lots as insurance at first base in case the Mike Napoli deal breaks down completely. WEEI has reported they have inquired into Casey Kotchman (pictured) and Lyle Overbay who are both free agents. Kotchman hit .229 with 12 HR and 55 RBI last season with Cleveland, he played 39 games in 2009 with the Sox. Overbay batted .259 along with 2 homers and 10 ribbies in 2012 while spending time with Arizona and Atlanta. Both of these guys are lefties which doesn't meet the need for the right handed power the team is currently looking for.

The only other righty that has been mentioned as of late is Washington outfielder Michael Morse which would take a trade to pry him loose. Granted he had nice numbers the last two years with the Nats, but he would be a free agent after 2013 therefore it could make it risky to give up young talent for a year's rental. He's also a high strikeout guy (126 in 2012) and the Sox certainly don't need another one of those in the lineup if Saltalamacchia (119 in 2012) is still in the plans.

All in all when the dust settles, the Sox will have probably worked out something that is satisfactory with both sides and end up with Napoli, Go Sox !!
