Oh shoot! Boston Red Sox bring back Bryce Brentz
Boston Red Sox top prospect Bryce Brentz is locked and loaded and ready to begin his 2013 Spring Training. Brentz, who hit .290 with 17 HRs and 76 RBIs last year for Portland and Pawtucket, was invited as a non-roster player to Fenway South, but he was unable to fulfill Boston's request when he accidentally shot himself in the leg this past Winter. Brentz, who just turned 24, is shooting for the stars as he tries his comeback from his non-serious injury. Brentz dodged a bullet when when was talked to, but not punished by, the Red Sox front office. He was hoping to make this year's Red Sox major league team, but Boston stuck to their guns and Brentz got shot down and was asked to report to minor league camp today and play in a AAA-game.
I am going to stick to my guns here and say that Brentz was not going to make the team anyways, even if he didn't poke himself with metal, but I hope he bites the bullet and works hard this Spring so that he is ready for next year. While Bryce's skills are projected to land him a job as an every day right fielder in the future, I hope he is not just a flash in the pan. He is a straight-shooter with plus arm strength and the ability to hit with power to all parts of the field. The Red Sox were right on target when they drafted him in the 1st round in 2010. I hate to shoot my mouth off, but looking at an outfield of Bryce Brentz and Jackie Bradley in 2014 or 2015 will give the Red Sox two above average young hitters who can spray balls all over the park, not shoot blanks. Looks as if Brentz is right of target to make the team within the next two years so look out, Shane Victorino, Bryce Brentz is gunning for your job!
