Hanrahan implodes in Sox loss

Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan gave up 5 runs in the top of the 9th inning as the Red Sox fell to the Baltimore Orioles 8-5 at rainy Fenway Park.

Leading 5-3 heading into the 9th, Chris Jones hit a solo home run off Hanrahan. After 2 outs were recorded, a single and 2 walks loaded the bases. A wild pitch plated a run and then Manny Machado homered to left to drive in 3 more.

Daniel Nava and Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to snap a 3-3 tie. For Nava (pictured) it was his 3rd home run in as many games; it was the first of the season for Saltalamacchia.

Ryan Dempster started for Boston. He went 5 innings before the 41-minute rain delay ended his night. He was charged with 3 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits and a pair of walks while striking out 7. Boston relief pitchers Koji Uehara, Junichi Tazawa and Andrew Bailey combined for 3 shutout innings before yielding to Hanrahan in the 9th.
