As we nurse our Bruins Stanley Cup loss hangover, we turn our bloodshot eyes to Baltimore. The Red Sox open a four-game series at Camden Yards tonight. The first place Red Sox (41-26) look to keep the Orioles (37-29) behind them in the AL East standings. The Orioles are third, 3 1/2 games behind the Red Sox.
Lefthander Felix Doubront (4-3, 4.84) faces off against rookie Kevin Gausman (0-3, 8.84).
Doubront could use some run support. The Red Sox have scored two runs or fewer in six of his last seven starts. He's 1-3 with a 5.21 ERA in those games. Doubront is 0-2 with a 2.70 ERA in three career starts against the O’s.
The Orioles J.J. Hardy, Adam Jones, Nate McLouth and Matt Wieters are a combined 3-for-28 against Doubront.
Gausman, the 22-year old rookie and fourth overall pick out of LSU in last year’s draft, will be seeking his first major league win in this his fifth start. Gausman has given up seven runs failing to complete five innings in two of his last three starts.
First pitch 7:05 EDT. Rain may be a factor tonight. Here’s tonight’s starting nine:
1. Ellsbury CF
2. Victorino RF
3. Pedroia 2B
4. Ortiz DH
5. Napoli 1B
6. Nava LF
7. Saltalamacchia C
8. Middlebrooks 3B
9. Drew SS
Pitching: Felix Doubront
Ellsbury Streaking: Jacoby Ellsbury has an 11-game hitting streak and is now hitting .283. Ellsbury has stolen at least one base in the last five games, tying a Red Sox record, and has 16 steals in his last 13 games. With 29 stolen bases this season, Ellsbury has more by himself than 11 entire MLB teams.
Drew déjà vu: Stephen Drew is 4 for his last 26 with 13 strikeouts. Drew is hitting .223 on the year. Say hi to your brother for me. It's time for Iglesias.
Making the Case for Nava: Daniel Nava is first among American League outfielders in on-base percentage, second in RBI, second in batting average and fourth in OPS. Write Daniel Nava's name in on your All-Star ballot.
