Game 143: Red Sox at Yankees - Rivalry Renewed

The first place Boston Red Sox escaped the Sandman with an extra-inning win last night and look to at least guarantee a split in the four game series tonight in the Bronx. The Sox have won six of seven and 10 of 12 games and are 6 1/2 games up in the division with 20 games to go. The AL East looks like it's the Sox for the taking.

Jacoby Ellsbury is out for the second time in four games with a sore hand and foot. Jarrod Saltalachhia remains out for the fourth straight game. Shane Victorino will man center and David Ross gets the start again behind the plate.

Here is the lineup for the Red Sox tonight (first pitch – 7:10 pm EDT):

1.Victorino CF
2.Gomes LF
3.Pedroia 2B
4.Ortiz DH
5.Napoli 1B
6.Nava RF
7.Drew SS
8.Ross C
9.Middlebrooks 3B

Pitching: Felix Doubront (10-6, 3.89 ERA). Doubront had one of his worst performance of the year against New York on Aug. 16, as he lasted only four innings, surrendering seven runs and eight hits in a 10-3 Boston loss.

The Yankees will send veteran left-hander Andy Pettitte to the mound. Pettitte is 20-11 with a 3.76 ERA in 40 career starts against the Red Sox.

Gomes table setting: Jonny Gomes will be batting in the two hole off the lefty Pettitte. Gomes' average against Pettitte is .355 with two home runs.

Middlebrooks has the will: Since being recalled from Patucket, Will Middlebrooks has eight extra-base hits and 14 RBI. Middlebrooks hit a long home run last night into the second deck.

Sox thievery: The Red Sox are 27 for 27 in stolen bases attempts. It's the longest streak in baseball since Toronto swiped 38 straight in 1993.
