Third baseman Will Middlebrooks "tripped" Allen Craig for a game-ending obstruction call on Jon Jay's ninth-inning grounder, giving the St. Louis Cardinals a controversial 5-4 win over the Boston Red Sox and a 2-1 World Series lead.
The MLB rule on obstuction states:
Immediately following the game third base umpire Jim Joyce and crew chief John Hirschbeck — both veteran umpires — were asked if they had ever seen a game end that way.
“Never,” Hirschbeck said.
“Never,” Joyce said.
