Well guess what?
He's coming back.
Evan Drellich from the Boston Herald is reporting that in addition to some front office moves, the Red Sox have announced they will be picking up Buchholz's $13.5 million option for the 2017 season.
Buchholz was 8-10 in 2016 with a 4.78 ERA. He won four of his last five decisions and from August 23rd to the end of the season, the Red Sox were 7-2 in games he started.
