Boston had a 3-2 lead in the ninth but closer Craig Kimbrel served up a game-tying solo home run to Alex Gordon.

Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Red Sox tied the game on a Mitch Moreland home run and an RBI single by Jackie Bradley Jr. J.D. Martinez scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to give Boston a 3-2 lead.

Chris Sale started and went seven innings in his fourth no-decision of 2018. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks. He struck out six.

Andrew Benintendi and Moreland each had three hits in the loss.

Prior to Wednesday's afternoon game with the Royals, the Red Sox placed left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez on the family medical leave list and recalled right-handed pitcher Marcus Walden from AAA Pawtucket.
