Eduardo Rodriguez and Justin Haley each allowed a pair of home runs as the Red Sox dropped the first game of their weekend series against the Yankees in the Bronx 8-1.

Meanwhile, C.C. Sabathia was holding the Boston offense in check over seven innings surrendering one run on six hits and a walk.

Andrew Benintendi doubled in the fifth inning to drive in the lone Red Sox run.

Steve Pearce made his Red Sox debut and doubled on the first pitch he saw from Sabathia. Pearce and Mookie Betts each had two hits in the loss.

Rodriguez went six innings in suffering just his third loss of the year. He was charged with five New York runs.

Boston has a good chance to even the series Saturday when the Yankees send Sonny Gray against Chris Sale.
