Red Sox Sweep Cardinals; Baseball is Fun Again.
The Red Sox have swept the St. Louis Cardinals after taking two of three from the Baltimore Orioles and are on a six-game winning streak. It seems like every single player in the lineup is mashing the ball and Baseball in Boston is fun again. The Red Sox scored twelve runs on Friday, five runs in the first game of the Sunday double-header (supposed to be Saturday's game), and eightteen runs on Sunday Night Baseball, with twenty-two hits, and nineteen balls hit over 100mph exit velocity.
The Red Sox have lacked in certain areas in their clubhouse the last few seasons, but one thing that has remained constant throughout the last few years is this team having heart. The Sox showed that in today's first game of the doubleheader. After a poor outing from Garret Whitlock, giving up two earned runs, the Sox found themselves down four to two in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Red Sox scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and Abreu walked it off with a hit in the bottom of the tenth inning. It was a game that felt like they lost their chance and blew a game they had no business losing, but they didn't. They put together some great at-bats and stole a win.
Rafael Devers has returned to his usual self, going two for three in Friday's game with an RBI and two walks, going one for four with two RBIs and a home run in Sunday Afternoon's game, and going four for four with 3 RBIs, two doubles, and four runs scored.

Somehow, with all of that being said, Raffy isn't the storyline of this weekend. It's the magnificent start that Wilyer Abreu has gotten off to. To think that there was a time this off-season that it seemed impossible to picture him in a Sox uniform is a scary thought. A gold glove in his rookie season, in the hardest ballpark to play rightfield, wasn't enough. During Sunday Night Baseball Abreu showed off his fielding ability with one of the nicest putouts you will see all year.
On top of that, he's now added a silver-slugging bat to his arsenal. Yes, he was a good hitter last year, but this is on another level. It's understood that this level of performance seems unattainable throughout the entire season, but even doing half of his current production, he'll be poised to have an incredible year.
Other noticeable standouts in this series were Alex Bregman, Brennan Bernardino, and Trevor Story. Alex Bregman has also been phenomenal to start the year. He has completely anchored this lineup by adding a power right-handed hitter. He provides a stability that this team has lacked in the past few years. He has come up clutch in what seems like every single moment that has been necessary so far.
If I am nitpicking, I would like to see the Sox finish a game strongly. In a twelve to six game on Friday, the Red Sox allowed the Cardinals to score three runs in the top of the ninth inning to finish the game twelve to nine. Again tonight, in an eighteen to three game the Red Sox allowed four runs in the top of the ninth. Sure, those runs didn't matter in the end, but it would be nice to see them close a game in a convincing fashion.
The Red Sox now will host the Toronto Blue Jays in a four-game series and will finish the week with a three-game road series against the Chicago Whitesox. These are two series that have to be won, even in April. The Blue Jays have cooled off from their hot start and the Whitesox, for whatever reason, always give the Red Sox trouble, even during their MLB infamously terrible season last year.
