Pedro Martinez on intentionally hitting batters, teaching how to do it right

It’s great to see Pedro Martinez in a Red Sox uniform again, and on Monday Martinez addressed the media (in full on Red Sox apparel, yes!) regarding a variety of topics including his time in Boston, his new role as a special assistant and his ability to scare the living crap out of opposing batters.

According to Martinez 90% of the batters unlucky enough to be on the wrong end of his fastball were hit intentionally (damn, that's cold). When asked if he could identify the players he unintentionally hit Martinez could only recall two names: Karim Gracia and Gerald Williams - ironically Martinez got into a confrontation with both men.

Now fast forward to 2013 as the Red Sox have asked Martinez to become a coach and mentor for the team's pitching staff. Peety seems to relish his new role within the organization, and has taken it upon himself to educate Red Sox pitchers on the nuances of his old scare tactics – thank God he’s on our side.

"You (teach) them when to do it, how to do it and how to do it properly and effectively. I think it’s all part of the game. You have to pitch inside and you have to brush them back when you have to,” Martinez said. “You have to actually make them feel uncomfortable all the time if you want to have success. One of the things that makes you feel uncomfortable is a pitch inside that is close to you at you at 99. Rubby De La Rosa or Doubront or Lester can get anybody uncomfortable. I will preach it and I will say they need to pitch inside if they want to have success."

It seems like Martinez could add the right mix of personality and fiery attitude that may propel the Red Sox pitching rotation back to where it needs to be, great. Work your magic Peety, work your magic.
