Stephen Drew suffered a mild concussion

During an at bat on Thursday night against the Minnesota Twins, shortstop Stephen Drew was hit by a pitch in the head. Drew stayed in the game after being hit but experienced mild concussion symptoms later in the night. Drew was scheduled to start the game on Friday at SS but was replaced by Jose Iglesias. When talking about the potential injury, manager John Farrell said "The way he reacted you almost think he didn’t see the pitch completely because there wasn’t a whole lot of diving out of the way. It wasn’t a direct blow. At the time he felt fine throughout the game. It was [Thursday] night when he started reading a book, the print started to get a little fuzzy on him. By rule, he’s being held out.” Drew must be cleared by Dr. Gary Green, a member of the teams medical staff that works with MLB before he returns to the team.
Stephen Drew is the younger brother of J.D. Drew who consistently underperformed during his time in Boston. J.D. was labeled as injury prone and now that Stephen is injured hopefully this doesn't run in the family. Drew is currently under contract with the Red Sox on a 1 year deal and has a salary of $9.5 million. Drew is expected to be the teams Opening Day starting SS and should see the majority of the starts this season if healthy.
