The Boston Red Sox made some moves Wednesday, just nothing major. The Sox added three of their best prospects to the 40-man roster.
Third baseman Garin Cecchini, outfielder Bryce Brentz and starting pitcher Anthony Ranaudo were all added to the 40-man. The move protects the players from being eligible in the Rule 5 Draft next month.
Cecchini, Brentz and Ranaudo are Top 20 prospects in the Sox system, according to MLB.com. Cecchini and Ranaudo were in the All-Star Futures Games last season.
Cecchini started the 2013 season at Class A Salem, hitting .353 in 63 games. He then moved up to Double-A Portland where he hit .296 in 66 games. Between the two clubs, Cecchini hit seven homers, 61 RBI and stole 23 bases.
Brentz played in just 82 games at Triple-A Pawtucket after shooting himself in the leg during spring training then suffering a knee injury. Brentz hit .264 with 17 homers and 56 RBI.
Renaudo spent most of the '13 season with the Portland Sea Dogs where he went 8-4 with a 2.95 ERA in 19 starts. The 6'7" hard throwing righty then moved up to Triple-A, started five games and went 3-1 with a 2.97 ERA.
