Kevin Kiermaier's lead-off home run off Matt Barnes in the top of the 10th inning snapped a scoreless tie as the Tampa Bay Rays carved out a 3-0 win over the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Red Sox starting pitcher Joe Kelly faced just four batters in the first inning before leaving with what was determined to be a shoulder impingement. He threw just 23 pitches, none of which hit higher than 92 on the Fenway radar gun.
Heath Hembree (pictured), recalled from AAA Pawtucket earlier in the day, threw 3.1 scoreless innings in emergency relief.
Drew Smyly started for the Rays, allowing just one hit - a third-inning single by Jackie Bradley Jr - over eight innings. He struck out eleven and walked just two.
