Trailing 4-2, the X Man led off the ninth with a towering home run to left. Mitch Moreland and Jackie Bradley Jr. drew walks and with two out and a 3-2 count, Betts drove a ball off the Wall to deliver two runs.

St. Louis had taken a 4-0 lead off Boston starter Eduardo Rodriguez in the top of the second inning on run-coring hits by Kolton Wong, Luke Volt and Matt Carpenter, and a passed ball.

The Red Sox cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Eduardo Nunez and a sacrifice fly by Betts.

Rodriguez settled down after the second inning. He gave up eight hits and walked one while striking out six.

Craig Kimbrel was the winner in relief. He, Matt Barnes and Addison Reed combined to throw 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.

JBJ also threw out a runner at the plate in the fourth on a 95.5 mph throw from center.

Boston has won 12 of 14 since the July 31st trade deadline.
