As the Red Sox welcomed pitchers and catchers to Fort Myers for the start of Spring Training 2021, they also made a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Earlier today, Boston acquired catcher Ronaldo Hernández and infielder Nick Sogard from the Rays in exchange for righty Chris Mazza and lefty Jeffrey Springs.
Hernandez was a highly-touted prospect in the Rays organization, although he has never played above high A ball in his five minor league seasons.
Sogard has just one year of professional experience, coming in 2019 in the now-defunct New York Penn League.
Mazza and Springs both played with the Red Sox during the COVID-shortened 2020 season. Both had been designated for assignment earlier this month.
The trade continues Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom's mission of rebuilding the Red Sox farm system.
