Clay Buchholz gave up a pair of first-inning runs and Mike Pelfrey tossed seven innings of one-run, five-hit ball as the Red Sox fell to the Twins 2-1 on Tuesday night at Target Field.
Following an 81-minute rain delay, the Twins jumped on Buchholz for three doubles in the bottom of the first. Boston responded in the top of the second with an RBI single by Mike Napoli that scored David Ortiz.
Despite the early shakiness, Buchholz (pictured) pitched well. He worked into the 8th inning allowing just two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four.
Sandy Leon had two hits for Boston in the loss.
